Summary:
The STEM Education Program Manager/Educator is the lead staff person dedicated to the furtherance of a new STEM-based education program for youth education at Bellingrath Gardens and Home.
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the STEM Education Program Manager will develop, execute, and evaluate a variety of mission-related, audience-focused learning experiences and a year-round program calendar for youth, adult and family audiences.
These learning experiences include PreK-12 school and youth group programs, school programming, summer programs, family classes, adult education and workshops, and informal education opportunities such as drop-in activities, and event and exhibition related programming.
This position is charged with evaluating current educational offerings and thinking strategically about how to maximize available resources to reach new audiences.
As a part of the education team, the STEM Education Program Manager assists in other areas of the department as needed to help Bellingrath Gardens & Home achieve its mission.
The position implements program standards that were developed in an initial capacity, and expands on this foundation through communication and coordination work with our program partners and with schools, administrators, and teachers in public school systems throughout southern Alabama, focusing on southwestern Alabama.
Primary duties of this position include:
The primary focus is to grow this new STEM Education program at Bellingrath Gardens and Home and to liaise both with essential Alabama STEM educational partners Expand this program with a focus on all aspects of youth education Cultivate contacts with cooperating public school systems (Mobile County Public Schools, etc.
) and continuing to identify other best-fit schools for pilot program testing and development Enact initial plans for STEM teacher professional development, with the goal of reaching Mobile County and Baldwin County and other southwestern Alabama public school systems Oversee all aspects of the Education Department including school and scout programs, family workshops and classes, youth birthday parties, community partnerships, drop-in activities, school activities, drop-off programs, and more Develop, coordinate, and lead educational programs and lessons on gardening, horticulture, ecology, botany, agriculture, climatology, arboriculture, and conservation, both on- and off-site, for children, adults and educators Create new dynamic activities, interactives, interpretation, curricula, and other educational tools focused on topics including art, botany, gardening, environmental science, climate change, sustainability and more Plan a robust year-round calendar of free and fee-based youth and adult focused classes and activities Create and implement an evaluation strategy for new and existing programs Work collaboratively with exhibitions and events to create family-friendly tie-ins Develop and manage the education budget and maintain, record, and evaluate program metrics Write, manage, track, and fulfill grants from public and private institutions and support fundraising efforts Develop strategies for promoting and facilitating relations between the Gardens and local community organizations and identify outreach opportunities Strategize and plan for areas of growth in the education department and identify potential new projects and program formats Interact with all appropriate BGH staff, as needed, to carry out the STEM Education Program.
Interview, assess, screen, and hire candidates for full-time and part-time positions in the Education department Train, supervise, encourage, assess, and counsel full-time and part-time staff Foster teamwork and mentor staff members by modeling best practices Empower staff by granting authority and autonomy whenever possible Encourage staff to participate in ongoing professional development Develop and implement tools and measures to evaluate the success of tasks and projects Other duties as assigned Qualifications and requirements for the position include:
Bachelor's degree in education, museum studies, plant- or environmental- studies.
Masters preferred.
At least 5 years of relevant work experience.
Professional experience in a public or private school system with preference in direct teaching experience in at least one of STEM disciplines.
Experience creating and delivering successful, engaging and mission-related programs in a non-traditional educational environment.
Knowledge of current public garden and/or museum education practices and trends.
Professional experience teaching in a public/private school or educational non-profit institution.
Demonstrated ability to create original content, curriculum, and programming for youth, adults, schools, families and educators.
Excellent management skills and experience working with youth groups.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience with grant writing a plus.
In-depth understanding of public school systems in terms of how they operate, the relationships between school system administrators and individual schools, and requirements of teachers Ease of communication with administrators, teachers, and students in the STEM disciplines Ability to fit state educational requirements into the context of a public garden and historic home setting Being a self-starter and self-directed educational professional Being able to partner, envision, develop, and establish a new programSalary:
$48 per hour.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
